Class I Areas
There are seven mandatory Federal Class I areas and one State
Class I area within the State of Wyoming
The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments set forth a National Visibility
Goal that called for “the prevention of any future and the
remedying of any existing, impairment of visibility in mandatory
Class I Federal areas which impairment results from manmade air
pollution”. A federally
designated Class I area, defined under
the Clean Air Act, includes national parks greater than 6,000 acres,
wilderness areas and national memorial parks greater than 5,000
acres and international parks that existed in 1977.
Wyoming has seven Class I Federal areas:
• Yellowstone National Park
• Grand Teton National Park
• North Absaroka Wilderness Area
• Washakie Wilderness Area
• Teton Wilderness Area
• Bridger Wilderness Area
• Fitzpatrick Wilderness Area |
Savage Run Wilderness Area was established in February 1978 prior
to the date of January 25, 1979 in the Wyoming Air Quality Standards
and Regulations (WAQSR) Chapter 6 Section 4(c) that designated
areas as Class I. Therefore it is referred to as a State Class
I area.
Each of these Class I areas are highlighted on the Wyoming
state map below.
